A Visual Valentine Story

Last year I had a commission from one of my collectors to paint a large symbolic interpretive watercolor based upon the lyrics of the Foreigner classic, “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Like the majority of us creatives, I listened to the request, suggested ways of making the printing of the lyrics on a large scale happen, and took on the project as an exciting challenge. I am pleased to say that the painting’s owner was delighted that I was able to grasp what he meant to say to his wife of eleven years, and it is that shared feeling that delights me as the artist when my clients share their happiness in “adopting my children” and living with them on their walls.

Yesterday I finally was successful in uploading the Mp4 on You Tube, a menial task, but one that I got to mark off my to-do list with satisfaction. Check! (Take that, you playful muses!) This month we were visited by ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ TV in Virginia Beach, and a neighbor called me to ask if I would be interested in helping provide my artistic services to the interior designer working with the show. As you may know, I am not a fan of being outdoors in cold weather, and even while bundled up in frigid winter gear, I ended up asking myself what was I thinking when I said yes? Luckily, it turned out that I was able to see some of the filming of the segments up close and personal, as well as visit the Art World trailer for food and occasional warmups. There were so many wonderful volunteers during the building of this new home, and I consider myself fortunate to have been a part of this mission. The Virginia Beach segment airs sometime in April. The article about the commissioned painting was written in the February 13, 2011 issue of the local Beacon section of The Virginian-Pilot by Bayside correspondent Irene Bowers. The song that was playing outside my then-studio when the final brushstrokes were applied? Yes, you guessed it. Must have been a definition of lasting love.
